I Hit Level 80 in Guild Wars 2 – What Should I Do Next?
Guild Wars 2: Two Perspectives on Playing the Game
Part One: Free to Play – No DLC Purchased
Yes, we downloaded and installed the game without buying any DLC. We started Guild Wars 2 as a regular free-to-play player. After creating our character and playing through the intro, we embark on our adventure. Correct me if I’m wrong, but as a level 2 character on the Tyria map, the game gives us a raptor mount (with a 10-hour usage limit).
Riding the mount around the map and trying to reach level 80 might sound fun, but leveling to 80 within 10 hours is tough. Without a mount, you’ll be walking around vast maps to complete quests. Let’s say you reached level 80 and still have your mount (which is unlikely). Once the mount buff expires, your raptor will disappear.
Traveling without a mount and walking long distances, especially in large maps, can become a real pain. So, what can a free-to-play account do after hitting level 80? First, you won’t be able to fully enjoy most PvE content. Your options will be limited.
Main story quests, map completion, meta events on Tyria core maps, world bosses, and maybe a few dungeons (if you can find a group) are what you can do. However, you won’t have access to the Auction House (AH) — no buying or selling, and no gold-to-gem or gem-to-gold trading in the Gem Store.
All DLC maps are locked; you can’t enter any of them. Daily quests are limited. In short, sustainability is not really possible. I respect anyone who plays this way. Choosing not to pay between $19 and $25 for a game or finding it expensive is a personal decision — it’s a matter of preference.

First, regarding content: if you reached level 80 but haven’t finished the main story yet, I recommend completing it. When you hit level 80, you’ll automatically receive an email indicating that Living Story Season 1 (LS1) is active.
ArenaNet started giving LS1 DLC for free a few years ago — many thanks to them for that! Depending on which DLC packages you have, you can follow and complete the storylines and scenarios. You can also work on map completion.
Chronologically, the storylines proceed as follows:
-
Main Story / Personal Story
-
Living World Season 1 (LS1)
-
Living World Season 2 (LS2)
-
Heart of Thorns (HoT)
-
Living World Season 3 (LS3)
-
Path of Fire (PoF)
-
Living World Season 4 (LS4)
-
Living World Season 5 (Saga / LS5)
-
End of Dragons (EoD)
-
Secrets of the Obscure ( SoTo)
-
Janthir Wilds (JT)
Let’s assume you own all DLCs. For those wondering what to do after reaching level 80, here are some suggestions:
-
Complete the main story fully.
-
Start with LS1 and play through all packages up to JT following the chronological order I provided (if you enjoy storylines, this is really great).
-
Work on map completion whenever you have time — it’s very beneficial.
-
If you own all packages, start the Season of Dragons achievement, which rewards a 32-slot backpack and a Legend Amulet for free as you progress through quests.
-
Complete daily and weekly vault tasks.
-
Do Fractals and Raids (try to join training groups to learn).
-
Complete daily strike missions and Dragonstorms (these offer good rewards, do them daily).
-
Enter the Home instance and gather everything with your gathering tools — the profit is high and it will help you a lot later on.
-
Try WvW and PvP — these are for players who don’t focus on PvE content; we will examine them separately.
-
Participate in open meta events and world bosses — the rewards are good, so follow and join these events.
Actually, what I’ve explained above might still be incomplete. You can find many things to do in the world of Tyria. Our next post will cover “What should I do to reach level 80?” Please don’t hesitate to leave your comments, and correct me if I made any mistakes — I’d be happy.
Wishing everyone good luck and have fun playing!
