Light Armor Classes

Are Light Armor Classes Always Fragile? Let’s Talk Necromancer!

When we hear the word “light” in MMORPGs, we usually think of low-health, fragile characters. While that might be true for classes like Elementalist and Mesmer, I believe we need to make an exception for the Necromancer.

Necromancer might actually be the most durable open-world class when using Berserker stats. It's tanky, scary, and it was my very first character in Guild Wars 2. When you enter Shroud mode, it feels like you're immortal — your health bar practically doubles, and you start draining life from your enemies, blinding them, frightening them, and more. It’s an incredibly beginner-friendly class. So, let’s talk about it!

Necromancer

Plague, skulls, diseases, life force — everything you'd expect from a dark magic caster. The Necromancer turns negative effects like poison and slow into powerful weapons. The green bar might even feel like it's calling out to you: “Play me, I was made for you!” Especially for new players, this class is forgiving and efficient.

I played Necro as my main for a full year without getting bored. It has three elite specializations, and they’re all very effective — some tanky, some supportive, some focused on DPS. For example, Reaper is a great elite spec that provides both survivability and powerful area damage.

The Shroud mechanic is the core of this class — it acts as a shield, protecting you from death. Even if you play randomly, just pressing the skills you like, Necro still keeps you alive. Of course, veteran players may have different opinions, but remember — this guide is aimed at new players.

By late 2025 or early 2026, I plan to share guides and gameplay videos on my YouTube channel. Some people prefer to read, others to watch — I’ll provide both.

My Advice?

If you're unsure, try different classes — but the Necromancer won’t let you down. Until you unlock elite specs at level 80, you can play as a classic Minion Master, summoning your undead army to fight for you.

Also, there’s an upcoming elite spec called "Ritualist" coming in the October 2025 DLC, which may replace minions with spirits. I’m very curious about how that will turn out!

Elementalist

This is definitely not a beginner-friendly class.

It may sound cool — you switch between Fire, Water, Air, and Earth instead of changing weapons. It’s a bit like the Revenant’s legend swap. In Fire mode, you deal flame damage. In Water, you heal and cleanse. Air provides speed and damage, while Earth gives you defense.

Sounds amazing, right? But the truth is harsh: this class does not forgive mistakes. Yes, its damage potential is huge, but very few people truly master it. In my five years of experience, I’ve seen very few skilled Elementalist players.

Necro can deal good damage with 4–5 buttons. Elementalist often needs over 40 key presses in the right order just to match that. So ask yourself: do you want to play a game, or play a piano?

If you’re new to the game, I don’t recommend Elementalist. You might get frustrated and quit early. Of course, everything I say here is for PvE. PvP and WvW are completely different and will be covered separately.

Mesmer

This class is truly unique to Guild Wars 2. You won’t find anything like it in other MMORPGs. It’s like a mix of Thief, Elementalist, Bard, and Paladin all rolled into one.

Mesmer can open portals, teleport, turn invisible, create clones that fight for you, and deal extremely high burst damage. It can play any role — DPS, support, or even tank in some builds. One of the most challenging but rewarding specializations is Mirage Condi. If you master it, people will say: “Don’t play the game — just watch what I can do.”

I haven’t played Mesmer much myself, but I’ll explore it in more depth in future posts.
