All Mounts in Guild Wars 2 & How to Unlock Them (2025 Guide)

Greetings to all gw2king visitors. Whether you’re a veteran player or just getting started with Guild Wars 2, I want to share this guide with you about all the mounts in the game and how to unlock them one by one.

In the past, there were no mounts. Players had to walk across gigantic maps or use classes that could grant themselves swiftness to move faster. That era ended with the release of the Path of Fire expansion, which introduced our new travel companions. These mounts allow us to leap great distances, climb high, skim across water, dive underwater, fly above the clouds, and even Tokyo Drift our way through Tyria! Each mount has a unique skill and purpose. Here they are:

- Raptor (long horizontal leap)
- Springer (vertical high jump)
- Skimmer (water surface and underwater mobility)
- Jackal (long jumps, pass through sand portals)
- Skyscale (can fly freely)
- Roller Beetle (very high speed and drift ability)
- Griffon (fast aerial movement)
- Turtle (can carry two players, usable on land and in water)
- Warclaw (originally WvW-exclusive, now can be unlocked with JT; features combat utility and leap skill)

Let’s now briefly go over each of them.

Raptor (Old Dino Friend)
Originally, you got the Raptor just by starting the Path of Fire story. But with recent patches, you now get it automatically after finishing the intro and reaching level 2 in Tyria. The Raptor is great for long-distance leaps. Pressing skill 1 deals damage when landing. Each mount has special skills that need to be unlocked with mastery points. Don’t worry — I’ll write separate posts for mastery and hero points soon!

Springer (Zip-Zip Bunny)
Need to reach high places? Back in the day, it was always a mystery how to get up there — until our zip-zip bunny came to the rescue. The more you upgrade its masteries, the higher it can jump. Skill 1 damages enemies and breaks defiance bars. You can unlock Springer in the Desert Highlands map by completing a heart quest and paying the gold the NPC asks for.

Skimmer (My Gliding Flying Manta Ray)
You can obtain this beauty in the Elon Riverlands map by completing the heart quest and paying the gold fee to the NPC. To unlock its underwater diving ability, you’ll need to level up its mastery line. I’ll explain the mastery and hero points system in a future guide in full detail.

Jackal (Master of Sand Portals)
Is it a wolf? A K9 police dog? Doesn’t matter — it’s one of our coolest mounts! Found in the Desolation map after completing a heart quest and paying gold to the NPC. To use all of its abilities (especially sand portals), you need to max out its masteries. A great example of where this mount is required: Wing 6 – Mythwright Gambit raid, where you must pass through sand portals.

While some mounts are unlocked via heart quests, others require long achievements and a lot of gold. I will create individual posts for each of those. Skyscale, Griffon, Warclaw, and Turtle are examples. Some are hard, some are just long. But we’ll go through them all together.

I'll also be creating short video guides for each mount on my YouTube channel. Thank you so much for taking the time to read this post!
