Skyscale ( Need Achievement )

 Skyscale

Yes, when we first started playing the game and were exploring the Tyria maps, seeing other players flying around freely while we were walking or riding a Raptor could be a bit frustrating. Questions like, “Why am I walking while they’re flying? How can I get this mount? What do I need to do to obtain it?” constantly ran through our minds.

When I first started the game, I struggled to complete most of my missions with the Raptor and Springer. Watching other players fly made me always want to have this mount too. I’m sure many players have felt the same way, and I respect that. In fact, when I started the game in 2020, my main goal was to get the Skyscale. After long efforts, when I finally obtained it, I thought, “Wow, my journey in this game is complete.” But it didn’t end there. Between fractals, strikes, raids, PvP, WvW, open-world bosses, meta events, and the game’s large seasonal events, the game was far from over—it was just beginning.

So, where were we? Ah yes, Skyscale! I want to fly! Previously, owning the Path of Fire (PoF) expansion and Living World Season 4 (LS4) was enough to unlock the Skyscale. However, with the latest DLCs, it’s now possible to obtain this mount more quickly through the Secrets of the Obscure (SoTo) DLC. Both methods work, but either way, it’s not a cheap or easy mount. It’s costly and requires effort, though obtaining it via SoTo is slightly faster.

However, here’s something important to note:

If you plan to start crafting legendary items in the future, I recommend obtaining Skyscale the old way—through PoF + LS4. Why do I say this? On my second account, I got the Skyscale through SoTo. It was beautiful, convenient, and I got it quickly. I was happy, but after completing what I needed to do, I realized it was time to start making a Legendary. I began with trinkets. Because of the Aurora achievement and the heavy Karma costs, and since it was done only in LS3 maps, I completed that first.

Achievements take longer, so that might be why I did it first. When I reached the Vision trinket, I realized I couldn’t complete the achievements because some Skyscale abilities I unlocked through SoTo master points weren’t available in LS4—for example, reading memories or following the Skyscale path. I thought, “Oh no, what should I do?” That’s when I understood that to get the Vision trinket, I needed Skyscale master points from the PoF DLC. So, I had to redo all Skyscale achievements from scratch. Between the costs, waiting, and time gates, it was exhausting to redo the Skyscale just to craft the Vision trinket.

From what I read on Reddit and other GW2 communities, unfortunately, the only solution was to redo the achievements and fully complete PoF master points. Ah… for this reason, if you are new to the game, enjoy it first! Don’t rush to fly everywhere. Exploring the beauty of maps, walking around, and using different mounts helps you appreciate the game more naturally.

Of course, Skyscale is essential, and I highly recommend getting it. But it shouldn’t be your only focus—your main focus should always be enjoying the game.

Now, if you want to get the Skyscale through SoTo, I will list which achievements you need to complete. And if you want to get it through PoF + LS4, I’ll also list those achievements. You can find many videos about this on YouTube, but my goal here is to share with people who enjoy reading. I’ve also started my YouTube channel, and once I upgrade my equipment, I’ll create longer and higher-quality videos. For now, I’m focusing on short videos to explain things. I do this with love because I enjoy this game. The player community is really nice, and sharing with them is wonderful (aside from the hardcore players, about 20% can be toxic—don’t let that bother you).

As they say, “The ship isn’t sunk for a few mice on board.”

Alright, friends, now I’ll list the achievements you need to complete in SoTo. Remember, you can press the ‘H’ key to open the achievement panel and proceed step by step in a controlled way.

Secrets of the Obscure (SoTo) Method for Skyscale

Primary Article: A New Friend

This method provides a streamlined way to acquire the Skyscale and also unlocks the Kryptis Skyscale mount skin via the A New Look achievement. The SoTo mastery track enhances the Skyscale’s combat abilities and allows both Griffons and Skyscales to use updrafts and leylines.

Players who have already unlocked the mount through Living World Season 4 (LS4) and only wish to unlock the SoTo mastery track do not need to complete the full unlock process below. This can save time and currency if the mount skin is not your priority.

Steps to Unlock Skyscale via SoTo

  1. Complete Chapter 2 of Secrets of the Obscure: “Hell Breaks Loose”

    • This unlocks both the mount and the SoTo mastery track.

    • Note: The mount can only be used in SoTo maps until the full unlock process is complete.

    • This will not unlock the LS4 mastery track, which requires completing LS4’s full unlock process.

  2. Unlock the Skyscale’s “Who Rescues Whom?” mastery

  3. Complete A New Friend and its sub-achievements

    • This grants the Astral Ward Skyscale Mount Unlock.

Sub-Achievements to Complete

  • Horn of Maguuma: A New Friend — Raise a Skyscale by completing collections for Skyscale Trainer Dyanne.

  • Horn of Maguuma: Skyscale Growing Comforts — Collect all food, treats, and toys needed to raise a Skyscale and deliver them to Trainer Dyanne.

  • Horn of Maguuma: Skyscale Egg Infusions — Infuse your Skyscale egg with all necessary magics, then bring it to Trainer Dyanne.

  • Horn of Maguuma: Skyscale Saddle Materials — Gather all materials for a Skyscale saddle and deliver them to Trainer Dyanne.

This was the short and quick way. Now, if you want to get it through PoF + LS4, let’s see what you need to do from there.

Living World Season 4 (LS4) Method for Skyscale

Primary Article: Skyscale/Walkthrough

This original method is longer but is mandatory for obtaining the Legendary trinket, Vision, which requires unlocking the Rift Repair mastery.

Players who already unlocked Skyscale through Secrets of the Obscure (SoTo) and want to unlock the LS4 mastery track must complete the full process below.

Steps to Unlock Skyscale via LS4

  1. Own all episodes of Living World Season 4

  2. Complete the following story chapters:

    • Legacy (Chapter 3 of A Star to Guide Us, Episode 4) — unlocks access to Sun's Refuge.

    • Descent (last chapter of War Eternal, Episode 6) — unlocks Newborn Skyscales.

    • Note: You must be logged into the character that completed the story and epilogue to receive the mail for unlocking this collection. Once unlocked, any character can complete the collection.

  3. Talk to Gorrik at Skyscale Eyrie in Dragonfall

    • This unlocks additional collection achievements.

  4. Complete all collection achievements to unlock the mount

    • Minimum total time: 3 days and 8 hours due to time gates:

      • Each new collection (except the initial one) unlocks 2 hours after the previous collection (Waiting for Gorrik effect).

      • One collection can only be completed as early as 3 days if contributing a maximum of four times per day.

    • Note: This will not unlock the SoTo mastery track, which requires completing SoTo’s unlock process.
