“Which Guild Wars 2 Expansion Should I Buy? (2025 Guide)”

Which Guild Wars 2 Expansion Should I Buy? (2025 Guide)

WHICH EXPANSION SHOULD I BUY?

Yes friends, usually when we first start Guild Wars 2, we begin with the free version. We try the game out, and if we enjoy it—or when we get frustrated with the limited features of a free account—we start thinking about buying a DLC expansion. Of course, players with sufficient financial means can instantly buy all the expansions at once, paying around $100 (or whatever it costs) with a credit card.

But what if you don’t want to spend that much money? What if a few months later you regret it and ask yourself, "Why did I buy all the expansions at once?" Or maybe your budget only allows you to buy one or two expansions. In that case, you'll naturally wonder: Which expansion should I buy first?

First, you can buy all expansions directly from the official Guild Wars 2 website. That part is clear. However, if you decide not to buy everything at once and instead purchase expansions gradually, then the question becomes: Which expansion should I start with?

Guild Wars 2 13th Anniversary Discount

By the way, due to the 13th Anniversary, all DLC expansions are discounted up to 60%! For details, visit www.guildwars2.com. These discounts can appear during different seasons, so watch for updates!

Guild Wars 2 Expansion Packages

1. I enjoy story-driven gameplay; narrative is important to me.

If story is your priority, I recommend following the chronological order of expansions:

  • Main Story → Living World Season 1 (free) → Living World Season 2 → Heart of Thorns (HoT) → Living World Season 3 → Path of Fire (PoF) → Living World Season 4 → The Icebrood Saga (LS5) → End of Dragons (EoD) → Secrets of the Obscure (SoTo) → Janthir Wilds (JT)

For story continuity, it’s ideal to own these expansions in this order. LS1 is free, and LS2-3-4-5 can be purchased over time using in-game gold by buying gems or taking advantage of seasonal discounts. (Personally, I bought all LS2-3-4-5 expansions gradually using in-game gold and following discounts.) If your budget allows, you can buy all expansions at once. The new Guild Wars 2 policy continues with one new DLC release per year, announced via the official website.

2. Story isn’t important; I want quick access to latest content.

If story isn’t a priority and you want fast access to new content, I recommend EoD, SoTo, and JT. Buying one or two of these will make your gameplay easier:

  • EoD → Unlocks new elite specializations.
  • SoTo → Gives access to open-world armor sets, Skyscale mount, and new content.
  • JT → Adds legendary weapons and a legendary backpack obtainable in open-world gameplay.

You may ask, “Do I really need the legendary items?” I will cover this in a separate guide under the “Items in Game” section.

Conclusion

Ultimately, choose whichever expansion fits your style, or stick with free-to-play. But don’t miss this amazing game—dive in and enjoy! You won’t regret it.

Wishing everyone happy, healthy, and fun days ahead!
