Gem Store Essentials: Don’t Waste Your Gold!
Hey everyone! What’s up, my dear readers? How’s your day going?
So, my schedule has been insanely busy lately. You might say, “Hey, you seem to have so much free time, writing long posts and trying to help players a bit.” And yeah, it looks like that, but trust me, friends, it’s not exactly like you think!
I drive for a clothing company, and besides that, I’ve opened a photo studio with a friend. In the studio, I teach courses for photography and design, and I also do photography work myself. On top of that, even though I’m not a native speaker, I know a few different languages, so I do some translation work too.
So yeah, with all that chaos, I manage to write posts for you on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. On Tuesday and Thursday, I upload shorts to my YouTube channel. And as for those long videos I mentioned, I’ll get to them soon—but they need calm and focused time to make content you’ll enjoy.
Alright, enough chitchat—where were we? Oh yeah! You’ve been playing, playing, and after a long time, finally accumulated some nice gold. Now it’s time to spend it wisely. There are a few must-have items that you should definitely get from the Gem Store by converting your gold to gems. Trust me, it makes your gaming life way easier.
When you start the game, you’re struggling to get your single character to level 80 and figuring out how to solve some problems along the way. That’s totally normal—this happens to everyone in every game. For example, you’re gathering mithril ore, stacking it to 250, and then—oh no!—your material storage is full, so extra ores just sit in your bag. It’s not a big deal at first, but later it gets annoying because your bag fills up fast.
Speaking of bags… this is actually one of the places where people unknowingly spend lots of gold. Getting 20-slot bags isn’t hard, and doing so early makes life much easier. You can also buy bag slot expansion tokens to carry even more. Later on, you’ll get 28–32 slot bags either via achievements or crafting. That’s a whole other topic to dive into.
If I summarize common early-player problems, they’re something like:
-
My bag is full, what do I do?
-
My material storage is full, no space left!
-
I’m tired of constantly breaking items and buying breakers!
-
Out of TP-to-Friend tokens, what now?
-
Bank slots are full, where do I put stuff?
-
Should I make a new character, or stick with one?
-
I want to use a 3rd build, I already have 2.
-
I can only equip 2 sets, why not 3–4?
-
Shared bag slots—worth it or nah?
-
Gems cost too much gold! How do I make enough?
-
That skin looks amazing, I want it!
Alright, I’ll go through these one by one in separate sections.
Bag Full? What Do I Do?
One of the first problems new players face is… full bags. The simple solution? Fill your bag slots with at least 20-slot bags. If you still need more, grab a bag slot expansion token (400 gems). Honestly, the best solution is unlocking a new character slot, which adds at least 100 inventory slots. Think about it—opening one character before getting 2 extra bag expansions gives you 40 extra slots from bags + 100 from the character. Nice, right?
Material Storage Full?
Even if you open a character slot and expand bags, material diversity is insane in this game. Just think: each ore type has T1–T6 variants, all counted as separate materials. Thousands of materials exist, so the best solution is buying Material Storage Expansion tokens from the Gem Store. Each token gives 250 slots. So, if you start with 250, one token adds another 250, then 500, and eventually up to 2,750 slots. With the Vision of Eternity pack, you can reach 3K. Otherwise, some materials just pile up fast.
Tired of Breaking Items?
Early on, vendor-bought breakers become annoying as you reach higher levels. Don’t panic—there are 3 types of breakers in the Gem Store for rare and exotic items. You can buy them all at once or gradually. Using the right breaker for the right item improves drop chances. But at first, it’s not urgent—you don’t need them immediately.
Out of TP-to-Friend Tokens?
Important: try to save your TP-to-Friend tokens. They’re crucial later for tricky jumping puzzles in LS3 maps, or whenever you need to instantly reach a friend or commander. Eventually, you can buy TP-to-Friend stones from the Gem Store, which is super convenient. Just remember, cooldown is 10 minutes.
Bank Slots Full?
This is a common frustration for multi-character players, especially when switching equipment or sets. Buying bank slot expansions adds new slots, but don’t rush it—use character slots first to maximize space. Spend your gold wisely.
Should I Make a New Character?
It depends on your playstyle. If you want to go full gem store + single character, that’s fine. But if you prefer free play and earning everything yourself, a new character gives you extra bank, bag, and material storage. No pressure to rush, but as soon as you start converting gold to gems, priority should be new character slots.
Only 2 Equipment Sets? Why Not 3–4?
Vault gives some free equipment and build template tokens, so don’t spend gems on this yet. Later, with multiple characters and legendary sets, you may not even need extra tokens. Convenience yes, but optional—depends on the player.
Shared Bag Slots—Worth It?
Not necessary at the start, but for endgame farming and meta events, they’re super helpful. Carry breakers, fast map transports, TP-to-Friend stones, and other commonly used items. Otherwise, you’ll constantly run back to the bank. Gradually expand them over time.
Gems Cost Too Much Gold! How to Earn?
Always check the gem–gold exchange rate. It fluctuates like a stock market. Plan ahead for events—Gem Store content may change, affecting prices. Follow Guild Wars 2 updates to avoid overspending.
That Skin Looks Amazing! Should I Buy?
Not yet. Focus on account and character development first. Fashion comes after necessities are covered. Of course, if you’re done farming and have extra gold, go for it—but don’t prioritize skins early, they’re expensive and endless.
I’ve tried to cover almost everything you might wonder about. If you have more questions, drop them in the comments.
Pro tip:
If you haven’t bought LS2–5, you’ll need Gem Store purchases to progress. Always wait for discounts before spending—check the official Guild Wars 2 site for updates.
